A user may shout out like this if something does not work as expected. It may be due to a system error. But often the problem is sitting in front of the screen….
No need to worry, our applications are complex and it can really happen that the user forgets one necessary step or minds a single detail. This does not only happen to beginners, also experienced users may get into a trap from time to time.
That is why we created a list of well-known clangers to help you help yourself.
Impossible to insert a rule
The rule is ready, the segment is open and you only have to insert the rule.
But why is it impossible to insert the rule? Where is the menu entry?
The magic word is: Codeview!
As soon as you switch from preview to codeview layout, the context menu changes and includes the “Insert” option.
Impossible to open Workspace
The template is ready and you want to see the preview in Workspace. You open the preview menu, select “Workspace”, but this application refuses to open?
Look to the top beyond the borders of Designer! There you will find the reason. The browser considers Workspace to be a popup. If you blocked popups, Workspace will not open. The different browsers have their own ways of showing this.
Firefox shows a bar top of the Designer.
If you click on the button “Options” a menu opens. There you can allow Pop-ups for the current application.
Chrome and Edge show a little red icon on the right side in the menu bar. For some seconds a message slides out and can be seen.
After a click on the icon you can allow the display of popups in the screen – similar as in Firefox.
As soon as you allow Pop-Ups or include Workspace in the settings of your browser this problem will never appear again.
Values are not visible as expected
You inserted test data from an xml-file to a segment. Everything is fine, but when you insert the segment into the template, data is either lost or you see other values as expected?
The reason? You do not use the same xml-files in the template and the segment. Check the sample files, use the same one and you will see the expected result.
Changes in design are not visible
The template was set to have with 3 columns. But in the editor it is only one column.
Why? Because some formats are only visible in the pdf preview.
This is the case for more than one column and also for footnotes. So better switch to the pdf preview before shouting out loudly.
Create! But what?
In the document panel areas for publications, templates and segments you can create two things: either a folder or a single element. The first option in the context menu “Create” without further description always creates a folder, the second option creates an element.

Understanding the refresh button
The button “refresh” is available for templates and segments. It is a little tricky if you do not know exactly how it works. In any case it starts changes, in detail as follows:
Case 1
- Initial situation: The template or the segment currently being open includes a segment which was changed or the current document includes a master which was changed.
- Result: The changes in the segment will be visible in the current template or segment using it or the changes in the master will be visible in the template which uses it.
Case 2
- Inital situation: The template or the segment currently being open has unsaved changes.
- Auswirkung: The unsaved changes in the current template or segment will be undone. The content will be as it was after you saved it last.
To be on the safe side the following warning will be displayed:
Confusion may arise if case 1 and case 2 come together. There are unsaved changes in the current template or segment using another segment or a master. In the same time changes in this segment or master shall be made visible in the using template or segment. If you click “Refresh” in the message box, the unsaved changes in the template or segment will be undone and only the changes in the used segment or master will be made visible.
